Bedelende meisjesBegging girls

Tussen de honderden bedelende jongetjes die je hier op straat ziet, zie je eigenlijk nooit een meisje. Die worden angstvallig thuisgehouden, mede ook natuurlijk om het zware werk daar te doen, of ze worden de stad ingestuurd, om daar te ‘dienen’ (zoals dat bij ons in de 19de E heette). Daar verdienen ze vrijwel niets voor een slavenleven: van 6 u. ‘s ochtends tot minstens 6 u. ‘s avonds, vaak tot middernacht, zijn ze in de weer niet slechts met huiselijke taken maar ook met zwaar fysisch werk. (Ooit al eens een jerrycan van 20 liter op je hoofd enkele kilometer verplaatst? BESLIST eens proberen!) Het gaat vaak om meisjes van 14-15 jaar, en wanneer ze na een jaar dienen (waarin ze niet één Euro verdiend hebben) op huisbezoek gaan, zijn ze meestal zwanger, en mogen dan van geluk spreken dat ze niet met HIV besmet zijn. Of ze worden de prostitutie ingestopt. Officieel is dat verboden in Mali, maar de Malinese manier is om over heikele dingen niet te spreken …. dan bestaan ze niet!

De Koran laat hier ook weinig onduidelijkheid over bestaan: Sura 24, vers 33 zegt duidelijk:

“But force not your maids to prostitution when they desire chastity, in order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this life. But if anyone compels them, yet after such compulsion, is Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (to them).” (Ali 2009: 39)

Voor wie aan de vertaling mocht twijfelen, hier is die van Abdel Haleem (2005):

“Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution when they themselves wish to remain honourable, in terms of your quest for the short-time gains of this world, although, if they are forced, God will be forgiving and merciful [to them].” (p. 223)

Of die van Arkoun (Paris: 1970):

“Ne forcez point vos servants a se prostituer, si elles désirent se prémunir contre la prostitution en vue des biens de ce monde. Si quelqu’un les y forçait, Dieu sera indulgent et aura pitié d’elles. De ce qu’elles n’ont fait de mal par contrainte.” (p. 276)

Of die van Henning (1960):

“Und zwingt nicht euere Sklavinnen zur Hurerei, wo sie keusch leben wollen, in Trachten nach dem Gewinn des irdischen Lebens. Und wenn sie einer zwingt, siehe, so ist Allah, nachdem sie gezwungen wurden, vergebend und barmherzig.” (p. 338)

Geen woord over diegenen die de meisjes tot prostitutie dwingen, dat is kennelijk OK, daar hoeft kennelijk geen vergevingsgezinde Allah aan te pas te komen. Ook het motief dat wordt aangegeven is interessant: je moet er niet op uit zijn, geld te verdienen met het prostitueren van je dienstmeisjes. Kennelijk gaat het in de tekst om een wereld waarin het dwingen tot prostitutie van afhankelijke meisjes tot de alledaagse geplogenheden behoort. (Waarom er anders een waarschuwing tegen uitvaardigen?) Interesssant boek, die Koran! Waarom vertellen de Arabisten en Islamologen ons niet meer over wat daar allemaal in staat, maar moeten wij dat op TV van hitsige jonge mannen horen, die waarschijnlijk nog nooit de Koran gelezen hebben?!!

Maar goed, gisteren werd ik op straat aangeklampt door een 6-tal bedelende <em>meisjes</em>, wat ik nog niet eerder had gezien. Het was duidelijk dat ze als groepje opereerden, wellicht om in hun eigen veiligheid te voorzien. Ik had niet veel om ze te geven (en geld geven we sowieso nooit!), dus ik gaf ze een tomaat. Toen ik naar mijn fiets toestapte, kwamen ze me allemaal tegemoet gelopen, gaven me een hand en kusten me op mijn armen. Ik hoop maar dat ze niet denken dat ik ook een ‘marabout’ ben….

That is because girls are painstakingly hidden in the house, to help their mothers do the household. Or they are sent to town to serve as a maid (as was usual in Europe until the first half of the 20^th century). There they earn virtually nothing. For a slave life that begins at 6 a.m. and runs through 6 p.m., often even until midnight. (Usually they just get a meal in return for that – Malians, though Muslims, are not particularly compassionate among themselves, that is rather something that is expected of white strangers.) During that time they are occupied not just with household chores, but also with heavy physical labour. (Ever tried to move a 20-liter jerrycan filled with water for a couple of miles? You should DEFINITELY have a try!!)

Most of these girls are about 14-15 years of age, and when they return to their village after a year or so they have not a single earning to bring in, are oft pregnant, and may be quite happy when they are not HIV infected. Or, if they are not sent out to serve as a maid, they may be put in prostitution. Especially orphan girls, or ones that have weak family protection, often end there. Officially prostitution is illegal in Mali, but the police are some of the customers…. And the Malian way of treating problems is NOT to talk about them … then the problems simply don’t exist!

The Qur’an is enlightening in this respect. Sura 24, vers 33 says:

Remarkable: not a single word about those who force young dependent girls in prostitution, apparently that is OK, no need for tha all-forgiving Allah to say something about this. Also the motive is interesting: you shouldn’t try to get money through prostituting your maids. Obviously the text is about a world in which forcing young girls into prostitution is something universally common. (Why, otherwise, would you have to fulminate against it?) Interesting book, this Qur’an. But why are Arabists and Islamologists not telling us such things, but do we have to listen on TV to the ranting of young men who in all probability have never quietly sat over the text of this book?

But OK, yesterday, I was accosted near the market by some 6 begging girls, something I had not experienced before. It was clear that they operated in group, presumably to provide protection to each other. I did not have much to donate, so I gave them a tomato. On going toward my bicycle, they stormed after me, shaking my hand and kissing my arms. I hope they did / do not take me for some kind of marabout…..
